Tucson is an old city, with all that that entails--historic neighborhoods, OLD neighborhoods, and barrios that have seen better days--in short, a real city with memorable buildings and culture, and not just year-old stuccoed monstrosities and Furr's Cafaterias. That being said, downtown Phoenix qualifies, more than any other nearby locale, as scorched earth. The University of Arizona, in Tucson, is an actual University that is known for something other than being in the top 10 party schools every year I'm looking at you, ASU.
Tucson is not Phoenix. Yes, there are similarities; but they are also very different. If you have already sold your soul to the devil, or have already lost it by some other means for instance, by acquiring a degree from ASU , then you will love Phoenix. Having lived in both cities Tucson has some things going for it: history, the mountains, slightly cooler temps, greener desert, etc. For all intents and purposes, Tucson should win. But, between the higher crime rate, the older, more run-down city, and the inept and corrupt city government not that Phoenix doesn't have issue in this regard Phoenix being the larger city has more shopping, dining and entertainment options.
There are more parks, zoos, museums and professional sports in Phoenix. The funny thing about this is that folks from Tucson tend to dislike Phoenix and folks from Phoenix tend to dislike Tucson. If you posed this question on the Tucson board you'd likely get completely different answers As I have mentioned before this thread seems to get duplicated - personally I like Tucson esp the areas right around it the Santa Catalinas, Rincons, Santa Ritas etc..
Someone made reference to the area around Dunlap and Cavecreek Rd. The area has never been able to shake that stigma keeping real estate investors away - hence the dumpiness. The mountain park system in the Valley and other things right around the Valley make this part AZ nice as well.
