A big part of sharing this experience with other people is observing proper hookah smoking etiquette. Too Much Heat! What bowl are you using? Larger bowls need more heat and smaller bowls need less. Seems simple enough. But what material is your bowl made out of? How deep is it? How wide is it? All of this changes the heat you need by just a little bit. Metal holds heat and heats up very quickly. You are going to need to experiment with each bowl to find the right amount of charcoal needed to get proper heat.
Harsh smoke? Take some heat off. Are you using a wind cover? Wind covers are great for protecting your coals from high winds but they have a much more common and useful purpose.
They concentrate heat. The amount of charcoal needed for a session depends on a couple of different factors. As your session progresses your coals will become smaller and provide less heat. Be sure to add coals as needed! If you are using smaller-sized coconut cubes, like Fumari Fuoco 22mm Cubes, you can safely start with an extra piece of coal.
Check out the chart below. No proper packing method, or no amount of heat management, will be able to save your bowl.
A hookah bowl needs tender loving care to be consistent throughout the entire duration of the session. Coal placement and adjustments are important to avoid hookah harshness and to keep your hookah smoking properly!
If it becomes too cool, bring the coals in a bit more. If it starts getting hot, pull some heat away by bringing them more towards the edges of the bowl.
If your bowl begins to get a harsh taste, make sure to pull some of the heat back by removing or repositioning your coal right away. Also, use the tray to ash the charcoal pieces when needed. Do not put a scorching heat management device atop your hookah bowl.
The shisha tobacco inside the bowl should be gradually heated and not immediately burned. Always use red hot charcoal pieces but in moderate counts.
Place the charcoal pieces at a distance on the foil or in the heat management device. You can place two pieces around the edges on opposite sides and one near the center. Do not let the pieces be too close to one another. Keep changing their positions during a session. Take blacked out pieces off the foil or heat management device.
Add fresh pieces when needed. Do not make large holes in a foil. This will lead to faster heating up of the shisha tobacco, harsh smoke, and a much shorter session. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. Avoid Overstuffing the Hookah Bowl with Shisha Tobacco A standard hookah bowl has a diameter of three inches at the top.
